It's no secret that Trump wants ICE to operate without oversight. As a part of the effort to criminalize oversight, Trump's DOJ turned my routine oversight inspection of ICE into a legal case against me that is putting our very democracy in danger.
I'm Democratic Representative LaMonica McIver, and fighting this case is more expensive than I ever could have imagined.
I'm in the middle of a legal battle to stop the DOJ's unacceptable suit from going to trial, and it's costing me over $1 million. And, because of House ethics rules, I can't accept any pro bono legal help.
Trump is targeting me to send a message to everyone. This administration wants to operate in the dark, without any guardrails. And they want to financially drain me so that no one else tries to hold them accountable. But I know I'm not an island, and I'm not alone in this.
I went to that ICE facility because people in my community deserved answers. And I have continued to go to bat to stand up for the people I represent. I don't regret that, and I refuse to back down and let the DOJ think they can bully me, or anyone else, out of doing what's right.
